Top-Rated Seller Judgement Day. Found Guilty. 30 Day Parole
Today (October 20) was the day for eBay to do it's first Top-rated Seller status evaluation. I was expecting to lose my Top-rated Seller status at this evaluation because of a decision I made several weeks ago. I have hundreds of listings where the shipping is listed at $5.99. This is actually a flat-rate. If you buy one item it is $5.99. If you buy 1000 items it is $5.99. These listings are old listings that were created before eBay added the combined shipping feature. Before going through and changing all of these listings to combined shipping I decided to try to sell them for a big disount to save me the trouble of updating so many listings.. I have been running hundreds of listings at 50-70% off to try to move these items. I also put over 1000 of them up at auction starting a 99¢. The bottom line is, in the last several weeks I have sold a lot of items at very low prices and very high shipping.
Because of this decision I was expecting many more 1's and 2's on my shipping DSR's. I didn't get near as many as I expected but the number did go up enough to put me over the desired .50% required for the Top-rated Seller status, as I expected.
Imagine the surprise, when I logged into my dashboard this morning and this is what I saw:

I still had my Top-rated Seller status. If you will notice there is a small flag by my Top-rated button & down lower there is a flag next to the text Status:At risk for 11/20/09. I do not remember reading anywhere that we would get a 30-day warning so this was a complete surprise. Most eBay changes contain surprises when they are rolled out. This is just the first one that I can remember that I am happy with!
As far as the Top-rated Status, overall I have been disappointed in it. I actually had a couple of my worst days ever since it was rolled out. I expected increased sales because of it but have not seen an increase even though I have run the most auctions over the past 30 days I have ever run in a 30-day period. To be fair, these were run during the special promotion which is usually not a good time to run actions because the site is usually flooded at that time.
Will I keep my Top-rated Seller status November 20. Only time will tell.
